Encore! A Leeds choir will give a second performance of the ‘brilliant’ new work Penthos. Composed in 2018 here in Leeds by Matthew Oglesby in collaboration with poet Hannah Stone, Penthos is a 55-minute work for choir and orchestra and is based on ancient Eastern Christian ideas about reconciliation and forgiveness. St Peter’s Singers, who gave the premiere, will give music lovers a second chance to hear it live at Leeds Minster on Good Friday. “When we gave the first performance of Penthos in October 2018 we didn’t know until the day itself what it would really sound like,” said the choir’s Chair, Quentin Brown. “So the first moments of rehearsal with the orchestra were ones of intense expectation, then revelation … and delight. It’s astonishingly rich in its emotional range - poetic, stirring, tumultuous, personal, spiritual, uplifting. We think it is phenomenally good.” The second performance takes place during an evening of music that also features Allegri’s famous Miserere and short works by Bruckner and Mauersberger. St Peter’s Singers and the National Festival Orchestra are directed by Alasdair Jamieson.
