Northern Ballet brings an exciting mix of contemporary voices and classic choreography to Leeds with Three Short Ballets this September. A triple-bill of short works, the programme features the world premiere of Grandes Études by New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Tiler Peck, the company premiere of Five Tangos by renowned Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen, and the return of Fools by Olivier Award-winning Mthuthuzeli November.
Three Short Ballets will be performed at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds from Friday 18 to Saturday 26 September, including an exclusive Under 30s Night on Tuesday 22 September.
About Three Short Ballets
Inspired by R.L. Peteni’s novel Hill of Fools and William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, Fools by Mthuthuzeli November tells a passionate tale of star-crossed lovers caught in the middle of a bitter rivalry between two villages. Following its 2024 premiere, Fools received a National Dance Award nomination for Best Classical Choreography and Northern Ballet Principal Dancer Sarah Chun received an Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for her performance.
One of Hans van Manen’s best known works, Five Tangos is a scintillating fusion of classical ballet and the drama of the Argentine tango. Originally premiering in 1977 and set to music by revolutionary tango composer Astor Piazzolla, this piece explores the complexities of human attraction in a world alive with rhythm.
New York City Ballet Principal Dancer and online ballet sensation Tiler Peck returns with a brand-new work, Grandes Études. The piece will be set to composer Franz Liszt’s Grande Étude de Paganini, played live by virtuoso concert pianist Rose McLachlan.
Under 30s Night
On Tuesday 22 September, Northern Ballet will be hosting a performance exclusively for audiences aged 30 and under at a discounted price. A sell-out event in previous years, attendees will enjoy a night of brilliant ballet complete with a free programme and a free drink, all for just £10.25.
