Independent Shopping

23rd July 2020

When it comes to retail, there are few places that can rival the offer in Leeds with all your favourite big names to be found. However, amongst the well-known giants sit an extensive range of unique and wonderful independent shops and vendors. From handmade craft shops to vintage clothing stores and one-of-a-kind jewellers, here’s a look at some of our favourite indie places that bring the city to life.

From 24th July, it is mandatory to wear a face covering when in shops. Please always maintain social distancing and follow Government advice.

One of the city’s most iconic independent shopping hubs can be found within the magnificent Leeds Corn Exchange. This burgeoning creative neighbourhood is home to a vast collection of independent vendors who do things their own way. Not just shopkeepers, but creatives, collectors, cooks and craftspeople.

Just across the road you’ll find an equally vibrant and jam-packed independent scene within the historic Leeds Kirkgate Market. As one of the largest indoor markets in Europe, Kirkgate is the independent shopper’s paradise. From fresh food, drink and fashion to jewellery, flowers, hardware and haberdashery. It is home to some of the most characterful traders in the city, with businesses spanning generations and representing a wide range of nationalities.

Then of course there are our famous and spectacularly beautiful Victorian arcades which are home to a huge selection of independent shops, vendors and cafes. Rivalling those found in Milan and Budapest, Queens Arcade, Thornton’s Arcade, Grand Arcade and the magnificent Victoria Quarter are all awash with history but each have their own unique atmosphere and identity.

There are also numerous other indie shops, galleries, cafes and bars scattered across the city including OK Comics, Hyde Park Book Club, Yorkshire Jewellery, Tunnel and SO many more which can be found here.

It’s safe to say we’re not short of independent spirit here in Leeds and after a challenging few months for our retail scene, it’s never been more important to support your local independents. So, be sure to give them a look when you #ReDiscoverLeeds.
