50 Years of Pink Floyd Performed at Magnificent Minster

23rd October 2023

Paradox Orchestra celebrates one of the most influential rock groups in history in the magnificent setting of Leeds Minster on 11 November.

The candle-lit 25-strong string orchestra will perform iconic hits from Pink Floyd’s seminal album, The Dark Side of the Moon in the beautiful gothic revival church.

Paradox Orchestra has made a name as one of Yorkshire’s most ground-breaking acts, featuring classically-trained musicians who vibrantly reimagine rock, pop, and dance classics.

Leeds Minster follows its sell-out performance at Conyngham Hall in Knaresborough that created a buzz amongst Floyd fans. Comments on the Paradox Orchestra Facebook page included audience member Judi Henderson: “Absolutely fantastic. Brought a tear to my eye. Been a Floyd fan for so long and now that they’re done, felt to me like the last homage to the best band in the world,” and Cath Knowles: “It was magnificent! Spine tingling when the orchestra started.”

Many of the young musicians in Paradox Orchestra trained at Leeds Conservatoire and perform in classical settings all over the world. They’ve also worked with some of the biggest acts in pop, including Ed Sheeran, Marc Almond, and Liam Gallagher.

Leeds Minster stands on the site of the oldest church in the city and is of architectural and liturgical significance. The Grade 1 listed building steeped in history, features a marble arcade with mosaics and Flemish stained glass.

Michael Sluman, founder, and artistic director of Paradox Orchestra, said: “Leeds Minster is simply breathtaking, so this performance promises to be a truly spine-tingling, transcendent experience. Pink Floyd left an indelible mark on music.”

Michael, 33, a graduate from Leeds Conservatoire who is now studying a PhD at the Royal Academy of Music, founded Paradox Orchestra in 2020.

Paradox Orchestra is known for their innovative and dynamic interpretations of classic songs. The orchestra’s expert musicianship and imaginative arrangements will bring new life to hits such as, Wish You Were HereMoney, and Comfortably Numb.

Michael added: “We promise audiences an incredibly high-level of musicianship on stage, as well as a showmanship associated with world-class large-scale orchestras. To play Pink Floyd’s greatest hits in such an epic, majestic setting promises audiences an unforgettable evening.”
