Australia take on England in Jousting competition at the Royal Armouries Museum

21st August 2023

The sporting battles between Australia and England are legendary, with clashes at the Women’s World Cup and the Ashes series earlier this summer.

These two mighty nations will compete in another thrilling battle this August Bank Holiday weekend – the Smashes. The Royal Armouries Museum will host knights in full armour, lances raised, as they charge into the fray in a specially-built outdoor arena in the heart of Leeds.

Spectators at the Jousting Tournament will be able to feel the thundering hooves, hear the clash of lances and marvel at the horse-riding skills of the Australian and English knights. There will be both male and female competitors in each team, with Australia represented by Andrew McKinnon, Renae Marisma and Clifford Marisma. The English team hoping to emerge victorious consists of Mike Collin, Emma Pearn and Valentin Timur Catuneanu.

Shows will take place at 11am and 2pm every day from Saturday 26th – Monday 28th August. Tickets have been kept at the 2021 prices and range from £5-£10 per person. Tickets include free entry to te museum and a packed programme of combat displays, dramatic performances, crafts and have-a-go activities to enjoy.

The final day of the tournament will see the most daring and chivalric jousters awarded the Sword of Honour and prestigious Queen’s Jubilee Trophy. The Royal Armouries expects to welcome large numbers of ex-pats and supporters from Australia to join the people of Leeds at this family event.

The museum, home to the national collection of arms and armour, is free to visit and has six galleries with over 4,500 objects on display showing how history, art and culture have been shaped by arms and armour.

Visitors can also enjoy the new exhibition display celebrating the history of modern jousting. This year marks 30 years since the Royal Armouries brought jousting to Leeds and turned it from a passion project of medieval enthusiasts to the international sporting spectacular it is today. The new exhibition display Full Tilt: Modern Competitive Jousting – opened earlier this year and features photographs, objects and new audio-visual materials in our Tournament gallery.
