The Gaze of the Gorgon & the Songs that Succour

27th January 2027

Take a pause from your day and immerse yourself in 50 minutes of moving live music and poetry!

Marking Holocaust Memorial Day, this powerful new commission by Saudha, created in partnership with Leeds International Concert Season and SAA-uk, explores the impact of trauma, memory and loss through the expressive language of poetry and Indian classical music. Drawing on the meditative beauty of ragas including Madhuvanti and Gaud Sarang, the performance offers a space for reflection, solace and connection.

At its heart is acclaimed Indian classical vocalist, composer and author **Chandra Chakraborty**, whose evocative vocals and beautifully crafted bandishes bring together poetry by Leeds-based poet **Tony Harrison**, German-Romanian poet **Paul Celan**, Nobel Prize-winning Polish poet **Wisława Szymborska**, and **Rabindranath Tagore**.

Their words are brought to life through spoken-word readings by **T M Ahmed Kaysher** and **Shree Ganguly**, accompanied by **Amith Dey** on harmonium and **Aniruddha Mukherjee** on tabla. Together, music and poetry create a rich artistic dialogue that invites audiences to reflect on shared human experiences and the possibility of healing through art.

This is a moving opportunity to experience a distinctive new work in which history, memory and artistic expression meet, offering moments of contemplation, restoration and hope.
