Leeds 400: Places
Celebrating Leeds 400 through the places that make Leeds, Leeds.
Leeds was granted its Royal Charter by King Charles I on 13 July 1626. Throughout 2026, the city of Leeds is marking its 400th anniversary.
Through our Cultural Collections, we are exploring how the University of Leeds has contributed to the wider city.
Artists – both residents and visitors to Leeds – have found inspiration in this city’s spaces, both grand and humble. From imposing civic architecture to spare industrial scenes, as well as its many outdoor green spaces. Depictions of Leeds highlight the city’s significant heritage, across culture, sport, industry, education and innovation. Several artworks capture the development of the University of Leeds itself, as well as the experiences of those studying or working here.
This display of artworks from the University Art Collection features paintings, drawings, watercolours, prints, sketches and photographs of Leeds places. They illustrate how the city has changed over time.
As we consider the past, Leeds 400 is also an opportunity to consider the city’s future. What will the city look like in another 400 years? What can we do now to ensure that our city continues to innovate and inspire, in a sustainable and inclusive way? How do you think Leeds will – or should – develop in the future?
