With origins dating back to Roman times and the Battle of Wakefield playing a key role in the English Civil War and the Wars of the Roses, Wakefield is a heritage stronghold. Formerly known for its trade in corn, coal mining and textiles, Wakefield is also part of the famed Rhubarb Triangle, and holds annual Rhubarb and Liquorice Festivals.

Something of a hidden gem, Wakefield is the gateway to the rest of Yorkshire and beyond, with key attractions including Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The Hepworth Wakefield, Pontefract Castle, Xscape Yorkshire, the National Coal Mining Museum, Diggerland and Theatre Royal Wakefield.
