MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU: THE ORCHESTRA OF OPERA NORTH BRINGS THE MUSIC OF STAR WARS TO THE STAGE

Light sabers at the ready! A stellar Sunday awaits all film fans as Opera North brings some of the best-known music from the Star Wars films to the Leeds Grand Theatre stage to celebrate Star Wars Day on Sunday 4 May.

During The Music of Star Wars, John William’s iconic scores will be played live by the 70-piece Orchestra of Opera North conducted by Caleb Young, an American conductor who regularly works with the composer: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with the fantastic Orchestra of Opera North to bring John Williams’ legendary music to life. Having had the privilege of working closely with John, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible care and artistry he puts into every note. His scores are more than just film music—they are symphonic storytelling at its finest, and I can’t wait to share both the power of this music and some personal insights from my time with him. This programme is a true celebration of his genius, and I look forward to experiencing its magic with the audience in Leeds.”

Repertoire for the evening, which starts at 7.30pm, includes firm favourites, such as Princess Leia’s Theme and The Imperial March from A New Hope, Hans Solo from The Empire Strikes Back, Anakin’s Theme from The Phantom Menace, The Jedi Steps from The Force Awakens and Across the Stars from The Attack of the Clones. To get into the spirit of the occasion, people are welcome to come dressed as the Star Wars character of their choice.

Richard Ashton. Opera North Head of Orchestra and Concerts says:

“May 4th has become a well-known date in the calendar for anyone who loves the Star Wars films, playfully picking up on the famous phrase: ‘May the Force be with You’. With the day coinciding with this year’s May Bank Holiday weekend, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to invite fans of the franchise – as well as anyone who enjoys a great film score – to come and hear John Williams’ amazing music played live by a full orchestra. We promise the sound will be out of this world!”

Film buffs can celebrate more movie music at Huddersfield Town Hall at 4pm on Sunday 1 June when the Orchestra of Opera North plays Film Music: From Mahler to Williams. During the concert, the audience will be treated to everything from Psycho to Jaws, Harry Potter to Jurassic Park. Conductor Opera North Music Director Garry Walker will guide the audience through the programme, exploring each piece’s place within film music history.

Tickets for both events are available now from operanorth.co.uk.
