Opera tops the bill at The Grand this October, while there is the usual mix of world-class music, comedy and variety at The Varieties, plus a ghost story or two to celebrate the spooky season!

Opera North’s The Magic Flute: Sat 5 & Fri 11 October (and February 2025)
The Magic Flute is the ideal introduction to opera for everyone, packed with fantasy, romance and daring. James Brining’s production, Colin Richmond’s shape-shifting design and Mozart’s musical fireworks make for a dizzying, magical ride through a world where nothing is quite as it first appears.
Opera North’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Sat 12 – Thu 31 October
An operatic adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream traces a tangled web of relationships hurtling towards catastrophe. Britten’s music vividly sets the scene for a light-hearted and enchanting romp and is recognised as some of his best opera writing.
Opera North’s Ruddigore: Sat 26 October – Sat 2 November
Hilarity, dancing and tongue-twisting singing… Ruddigore has all the hallmarks of classic Gilbert and Sullivan, a creative duo unlike any other who made a profound mark on the light opera world.
Opera North’s Top Gun: Maverick in Concert: Mon 28 October
Top Gun: Maverick in Concert will feature the Orchestra of Opera North performing Lorne Balfe, Harold Faltermeyer, Lady Gaga and Hans Zimmer’s score – conducted by Ben Palmer. Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for six Academy Awards® including Best Picture and Best Original Song, winning Best Sound.
Opera North’s The Big Opera Adventure: Tue 29 October
Recommended for families with children aged 5 to 12 years old. Solve clues, unravel riddles and sing along in this new interactive show, as you meet fairy tale characters, animals and even a grandfather clock. With music from the Orchestra of Opera North, this is a fun and engaging opportunity for families to dive into the world of opera.

Kirk Field: Acid House Cabaret: Rave New World: Wed 23 October
Celebrate acid house in a unique, ground-breaking show that will feature the author of the award-winning, best-selling book RAVE NEW WORLD: confessions of a raving reporter, Kirk Field, supported by Rob Tissera.
