Yorkshire Brass Bands join Leeds Playhouse’s new production of Brassed Off
2nd April 2026
Horbury Victoria Brass Band and Wakefield Metropolitan Brass Band to perform live on stage during the production
Marking the 30th anniversary of Mark Herman’s iconic 1996 film, Leeds Playhouse proudly announces that Horbury Victoria Brass Band and Wakefield Metropolitan Brass Band will perform live as part of its major new staging of Brassed Off.
Directed by award-winning Amy Leach (Animal Farm, Best Play Revival – 2025 UK Theatre Awards) and adapted for the stage by Paul Allen, this powerful new production honours the heart, humour and grit that have made Brassed Off a beloved British classic.
Horbury Victoria Brass Band Chairperson Charlie Welch said: “This is a marvellous opportunity for our band. Brassed Off captures everything that makes brass banding so special – community, resilience, pride, and the emotional power of live music. To be part of bringing that story to life at Leeds Playhouse is something our players are incredibly proud of. It truly feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and there’s a real sense of excitement and honour across the whole organisation.”
Richard Stevens of Wakefield Metropolitan Brass Band said: “The opportunity to be part of this production of Brassed Off is a fantastic experience for the players. We all know that it is going to require a lot of commitment, but all concerned are filled with excitement at the thought of performing at Leeds Playhouse.”
The story follows the tightknit mining community of Grimley as they face the closure of their colliery and fight to keep their brass band – and their dignity – alive. Combining live music from two much-loved Yorkshire brass bands with a bold reimagining of the film’s themes for 2026, the production is a rousing tribute to resilience, solidarity and the enduring power of community spirit.
Director Amy Leach said: “It’s a real honour to bring Brassed Off to the stage in a fresh new production, especially as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic British film. This story of resilience, community and the unifying power of music feels just as urgent and moving today as it did in 1996. Working with Horbury Victoria Brass Band and Wakefield Metropolitan Brass Band brings an authenticity and emotional punch that only live brass can deliver. We’re reimagining Grimley Colliery Band’s journey for a new generation, and I can’t wait to share it with audiences at Leeds Playhouse.”
