Prospects of Leeds: Talk and Sketch Club
As part of the Leeds 400 celebrations, we are pleased to announce the return of our art competition. For the 16s and over category, we are inviting people to create a new prospect of Leeds. But what exactly is a prospect? Join us for an evening of discovery and sketching to find out.
We’ll begin at Leeds Central Library, where Senior Librarian Antony Ramm from the Local and Family History department will guide us through more than 300 years of prospects of Leeds, from the 17th to the 21st century, in an illustrated talk. Afterwards, there will be a chance to view related archive materials, including the rare opportunity to see William Boyne’s magnificent seven-volume History of Leeds.
We’ll then walk to the Broadgate building for a relaxed sketch club on the panoramic rooftop terrace, led by artist, historian and Leeds Civic Trustee Clifford Stead. It’s an inspiring spot to start creating your own prospect of the city.
There’s no formal teaching, but plenty of space to be creative, share ideas and chat with others. Afterwards, those who’d like to are welcome to join us for a drink at The White Swan and meet fellow creatives.
Art supplies: No equipment will be provided, so please bring your own creative materials. This doesn’t need to be professional art equipment; paper and a pencil or pen are perfect for sketching. If you’d like to bring paints, boards or other materials, please do. You might even choose photography as your way of creating a new prospect of the city.
