From Homer to Hollywood: Nolan’s Odyssey and the traumatised hero, by Professor Emma Stafford

12th November 2026

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, released in July 2026, has certainly got people talking! But how does this latest Hollywood adaptation compare with earlier versions of Homer’s epic? What makes its hero, Odysseus, such a fascinating and controversial character? And why do ancient stories continue to capture our imaginations and provoke strong reactions?
Join us for an engaging exploration of how one of the world’s oldest stories continues to find new life on screen, and discover why The Odyssey still matters today.

The talk will be delivered by Professor Emma Stafford, Professor of Classics at the University of Leeds.

This is a Leeds City of Languages Festival event. Check the full programme at leedscityoflanguages.leeds.ac.uk
