New tourism campaign on-track to tempt Londoners to Leeds

26th June 2023

Visit Leeds and LNER set to launch a joint campaign encouraging people to travel from London to Leeds for their next UK city-break.

Launching on 26 June 2023 and running throughout the year London North Eastern Railway (LNER) and Visit Leeds will be working together to inspire even more visitors to explore Leeds. Exclusive content will showcase the city and everything it has to offer as a destination, encouraging visitors to Leeds to travel by train establishing LNER as the train provider of choice. With regular services and a journey time of around two and a quarter hours between London King’s Cross and Leeds, the campaign will focus on how a city-break can begin as soon as your journey does. Passengers travelling with LNER can relax and enjoy the journey without leaving their seat with snacks and drinks delivered directly to them whilst reading or catching up with friends and family. The campaign will also showcase Leeds 2023 Year of Culture highlighting Leeds’ vibrant cultural offer, thriving food and drink scene, stunning architecture and unique history and heritage.

Travelling to Leeds by LNER is also ideal for those Londoners interested in exploring more sustainable and green tourism travel options especially for those wishing to extend their stay and explore the region further. Leeds is perfectly positioned as a gateway to Yorkshire and gives visitors a cool urban city-break with breath-taking scenery on the doorstep; encompassing two national parks and two areas of outstanding beauty, as well as a wealth of historic market towns and industrial heritage spots, all of which can be reached using public transport.

David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER said: “We are really proud of the destinations we serve. Leeds is a vibrant, historic and culturally rich city packed with hidden gems and what better way to travel there than via our direct services from London King’s Cross.

“LNER is continuing to welcome more and more people back to rail. We know our services deliver significant economic, social and environmental benefits to the towns, cities and regions we serve, and we are delighted to be working with Visit Leeds and tourism organisations along our route to further enhance the visitor economy.”

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s Executive Member for Economy, Culture and Education said: “We’re delighted to be launching this new initiative to encourage even more visitors from London to experience our fantastic city. As we celebrate our LEEDS 2023 Year of Culture, now is the time for people to see for themselves what makes Leeds one of Europe’s best cities to visit.

“This is a fantastic opportunity that will give Londoners more opportunities to see all the unique experiences Leeds and Yorkshire have to offer. Leeds is a vibrant and diverse, welcoming city with a wealth of cultural events, outstanding museums and galleries and plenty of access to breath-taking countryside. It’s a perfect city-break destination.”

This multi-channel campaign will target key audiences giving them plenty of reasons to book a city-break to Leeds using LNER as their choice of travel. In addition to Leeds celebrating its Year of Culture, there are numerous cultural events and activities that take place in the city every year through summer – including Sounds of the City, Millennium Square Summer Series, Leeds Festival, Pride, Leeds Carnival – and Autumn – Light Night, Opera North, Leeds Festival of Ideas, Leeds International Film Festival and into the Winter Season.
