Voodoo Events and Ten Bar Underground: Remixing student nightlife for 2020

  • The North’s leading events company present an all-new student nightlife calendar for 2020
  • Voodoo Events have created a range of fun, safe and socially distanced events for fresher’s week and beyond
  • The brand has also temporarily extended their very own Ten Bar using the nearby Space Nightclub venue to create Ten Bar Underground
  • Ten Bar Underground has been carefully designed to enable the ultimate party atmosphere with a strong focus on safety and social responsibility

An established northern events company are re-writing the student nightlife rulebook, with a calendar of 8 weekly freshers events fit for the new the post-lockdown world starting in September. Voodoo Events have a reputation for throwing the biggest and best student parties in Leeds and their newly revamped offering is set to lead the way as far as social responsibility is concerned.

The company has spent months planning their 2020 events calendar and worked closely with local councils and risk assessors to ensure students have a safe space to let their hair down. This includes a series of socially distanced indoor and outdoor events at venues including Revolution, The Shed, Temple Arches and Popworld.

Industry shake-up

The measures taken by Voodoo Events will no doubt be welcomed by West Yorkshire Police, who have had to deal with an unprecedented number of illegal raves and parties throughout spring and summer.

Dave Gardner-Chan, Voodoo Events Co-Founder and Managing Director, had this to say on the industry shake-up:

“Throughout the summer the whole industry has been waiting for news on whether clubs could open, and freshers would happen. We realised it was unlikely so decided to put together an alternative set of events for both students and locals. After lots of positive Zoom meetings with all the relevant agencies and student bodies, we’re over the moon to have a brand-new line-up of 8 weekly events launching this September.”

“We realise we have an enormous responsibility to both our customers and the general public to deliver professionally managed, risk assessed, responsible events. We decided to close our club nights before the Government enforced it because we felt it was the right thing to do. We’ve spent many late nights planning these new events to ensure that the new and returning students have a safe place to enjoy themselves rather than choosing to go to unregulated house parties or illegal raves.”

Drastic new look

Voodoo Events have also taken the opportunity to extend the ever-popular Ten Bar, which has been a major part of their impressive portfolio since opening back in January 2017. The first of their new concepts, Ten Bar Underground, will reside in the legendary Space Nightclub and act as a bar until clubs are permitted to re-open.

Complete with a drastic new look that includes full seating, table service and a state-of-the-art audio-visual set-up, Ten Bar Underground has the potential to act as a template for which similar club venues could follow.

Like other nightclubs across the UK, Space has unfortunately been unable to continue in its current form for the time being due to social distancing. The temporary takeover was a no-brainer for the Voodoo team, as both Ten Bar and Space operate under the same license.

Speaking of the Ten Bar Underground concept, Dave said:

“We’ve been delighted about the response we’ve had at Ten Bar since we reopened in July. Space and Ten Bar trade on the same license, so when it became apparent that Space Nightclub would be unable to open, we decided to adapt the venue and rebrand it as Ten Bar Underground. The feel will be quite different, but we hope to keep the fun atmosphere of both venues, providing the best experience we can, with safety in mind.”

Iconic restaurant brand

Careful consideration and meticulous planning have allowed Voodoo to create an enticing mix of events that allows guests to feel safe, without compromising on the all-important fun factor. Secret Yard Social will take place on Monday’s at Temple Arches, and boasts the finest local street food vendors, DJ’s, and live entertainment in a large outdoor space.

Quids In, one of Voodoo’s biggest events, has a mini version taking place at Popworld, Revolution and Walkabout. Each venue will represent one of the music policies from its spiritual home, Pryzm.

Skint will reside at Ten Bar and Ten Bar Underground each Thursday, with an eclectic mix of party-centric tunes to usher in the weekend.

Voodoo will be teaming up with the iconic restaurant brand Red’s True Barbecue for weekend brunches at Red’s HQ, The Shed, for a new bottomless brunch concept. Expect amazing food and drink including beer brewed on-site at their very own micro-brewery.

Vibrant nightlife scene

All events are table only and must be pre-booked via the Voodoo Events website to ensure the safety of guests and team members. Each venue will be enforcing strict Track and Trace measures and orders will be taken electronically via apps such as W8R.

Leeds is well known for its vibrant nightlife scene and the student community play a vital role in boosting the city’s economy. The 2020 freshers’ season marks an exciting new chapter in the Voodoo Events story, which began back in 2006. Since then, the brand has expanded to Manchester, Sheffield, and Newcastle.

Dave had this to say ahead of the Voodoo Events launch:

“The city’s economy will get a huge and welcomed boost from the arrival of thousands of students. Leeds is an amazing city and lots of businesses will find enterprising ways to provide them with the best experiences despite 2020 being such a tricky year. We can’t wait to get back to what we do best.”
