Halifax Town Hall

Halifax’s ornate and impressive town hall was designed by Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament in London. This Grade ll* listed building is of immense architectural importance and has a magnificent 180ft tower and spire which is enriched with sculptures. Even when it was opened in August 1863 – by the Prince of Wales, during the first visit to Halifax by a member of the Royal Family – it was described as ‘a masterpiece’ and was built to be the most grand and significant building in the town. The building was opened to the public on 11th August 1863 and the first Council meeting was held in the new Town Hall on 18th September 1863. It still stands today, in all its glory and splendour, as a reminder of the affluence of Halifax in the 19th century. Free guided tours of Halifax Town Hall can be arranged to help you learn more about its fascinating history. Please contact 01422 357257.
