Theatre Royal Wakefield

Opened in 1894, the theatrical masterpiece that is Theatre Royal Wakefield was designed by Victorian architect Frank Matcham.

In his prolific career, Matcham built hundreds of theatres – but none are as intimate
as his smallest, most special creation in the centre of our city.

On their two stages – the original 19th century Matcham Auditorium, and the Walker Studio, which opened in 2018 – the theatre’s programme includes music, comedy, pantomime, musicals, plays, and much more.

Theatre Royal Wakefield’s Creative Director is John Godber, whose plays are performed across the world. The award-winning and BAFTA nominated writer has created modern classics including Bouncers, Teechers and Up ‘n’ Under, and has the distinction of being one of the most performed writers in the English language.

Theatre Royal Wakefield’s Executive Director is Katie Town who joined the organisation in 2015 after being General Manager of the Learning department at the National Theatre in London as well as key leadership roles at Candoco Dance and The Royal Opera House. She originally trained as a barrister and is also a recently appointed trustee of the Theatres Trust.

Theatre Royal Wakefield productions can also be seen touring throughout the UK.
