Scalarama 2026: Forbidden Letters (1979)
Arthur J. Bressan Jr. was one of the most unique filmmakers to come out of the Gay Liberation Movement, moving between documentaries, erotic dramas, and arthouse fiction films. Forbidden Letters is his second erotic feature and explores an unusual chosen family separated by the imprisonment of the Daddy figure. Featuring spicy scenes somehow shot in Alcatraz, gorgeous sea cinematography, documentary inserts and a profound and deep sense of yearning. For me this film reflects on the difficulty but importance of forming meaningful connections in the atomised environment of the modern city via the medium of explicit sex.
There will be an introduction, the bar will be open, and there will be space for socialising after so please join me for a rare public screening of what I believe is one of the most honest, touching, beautiful and certainly most explicit queer films of the period!
