One Way or Another (De Cierta Manera) +Shorts
One Way or Another tells the story of Mario and Yolanda, a young couple building a life together in the aftermath of the Cuban Revolution. Put together in an innovative and entertaining pseudo-documentary style with real Cuban citizens playing themselves in a fictionalised version of their own lives, the film explores the not-always-straightforward relationship between economic and social change. A high point of the radical phase of Cuban film-making in the state film company ICAIC, the film was sadly initially banned from exhibition by the Cuban government due to its nuanced portrayal of the Revolution, so remains under-seen. The film is also notable due to the perspective of director Sara Goméz, an Afro-Cuban woman who tragically died young during the film’s production.
Doors will open at 7pm with the film programme starting shortly after.
Donations will be collected for the Cuba Solidarity Campaign.
There is a staircase at the front entrance to the venue on Great George Street; and there is an accessible entrance with a platform lift via the rear entrance on Alexander Street. There is an automatic door open button on the left-hand side of the door which can be operated by a single wheelchair user. Alexander Street is cobbled.
Presented by Leeds Guild of Amateur Marxists, a member-led reading group and social club.
