‘Healing Waters’ A Heritage Talk from Thackray Museum of Medicine
Water has long been associated with healing, health and wellbeing, but our understanding of why it helps us has continually evolved. Through the history of Leeds, this thought-provoking talk explores how our relationship with water reflects changing ideas about medicine, science and public health.
From sacred wells and Victorian bathhouses to modern swimming pools, we’ll uncover the city’s rich history of healing waters and ask what has changed, and what has remained remarkably constant. While our reasons for valuing water have evolved over the centuries, we continue to instinctively recognise its power to restore, connect and improve our wellbeing.
Join Thackray Museum of Medicine and Bramley Baths for a fascinating journey through Leeds’ watery past, exploring the enduring relationship between water, health and the communities built around it.
Delivered by Thackray Museum of Medicine in collaboration with Bramley Baths as part of the #morethanapool heritage programme.
This talk will run 1pm-2pm, with an additional 30 minutes for any discussion points and questions from the audience.
