AI x Music in Korea, as part of the Leeds Korean Day Festival

13th November 2026

Talk One  – Digital Therapeutics using 3D Audio Technologies

Spatial audio can help people with hearing loss pick out speech in noise. The lab’s gamified training programme for spatial auditory attention uses augmented-reality audio processing to make that training accessible at home — a step towards audio-centred digital therapeutics.

Dr Sungyoung Kim works on spatial and immersive audio, auditory perception and critical-listening education, with research on aural heritage reconstructing culturally significant sound environments.

Talk Two – From K-Pop to the Brain: Music, Mind and Technology at KAIST University.

What happens in the brain when we hear music we love, and why do we feel closer to other people at a concert? Using repertoire from classical to K-pop, MuBL studies preference, emotion and expertise, shared concert experience, and new forms of listening through VR, wearables and cochlear implants.

Dr Kyung Myun Lee directs the Music and Brain Lab (MuBL) and researches the neural processing of music, the concert experience, and musical emotion and preference from biosignals. She is the Associate Editor of Music Perception.

Talk Three – Human–AI Music Ensemble

What does it take for a machine to play alongside a performer? Real-time piano transcription, score following
and visual cue detection build the low-latency pipeline behind human–AI ensemble performance, with case
studies from the stage and from music education.

Prof. Juhan Nam leads the Music and Audio Computing Lab and directs the Sumi Jo Performing Arts Research Center. PhD in Music from Stanford (CCRMA); previously built synthesizers and digital pianos at Young Chang (Kurzweil).

In collaboration with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST University).
