Festive Frights – The Woman in Black (1989)
Join us for our Yuletide screening of this often forgotten British horror gem and adaptation of Susan Hills classic gothic ghost story, The Woman In Black (1989)
From director Herbert Wise (I’Claudius, Rumpole of the Bailey) and writer Kigel Kneale (The Stone Tape, The Quatermass Experiment, Halloween 3)
When a friendless old widow dies in the market town of Crythin Gifford, a young solicitor is sent in to settle her estate. Following cryptic warnings from the locals regarding the terrifying history of the old woman’s house, he very soon begins to see visions of a menacing woman in black.
Atmospherically directed by Nominated Herbert Wise and starring Adrian Rawlins as the unfortunate young solicitor alongside Pauline Moran as the terrifying revenant, this unsettling drama remains a high-water mark for ghost story adaptations and still retains a master class on building up fear with just atmosphere and skilful story telling.
Originally Aired Christmas Eve 1989 carrying on the long tradition of ghost stories been shared around the festive season.
