Film Screening of English Vinglish (Hindi with English subtitles) followed by a discussion on multilingualism, identity, belonging and the power of language to connect cultures by Dr Priyanka Singh
Join us for a screening of English Vinglish (Hindi with English subtitles), an uplifting film that explores the relationship between language, confidence, and identity. The story follows an Indian woman who, while visiting New York, enrols in an English language class and gradually discovers her own voice, self-worth, and independence.
After the screening, participants are invited to join an informal discussion on themes including multilingualism, language and identity, migration, belonging, family relationships, and the value of every language. The conversation will encourage audiences to reflect on their own language-learning journeys and the ways language shapes our lives, communities, and cultural understanding.
This event welcomes speakers of all languages and backgrounds. No knowledge of Hindi is required, as the film will be screened with English subtitles.
This is a Leeds City of Languages Festival event. Check the full programme at leedscityoflanguages.leeds.ac.uk
