Mr Pablo Fanque – A Gentleman of Colour

14th November 2025

A True Story of Love,Tragedy and Aspiration.

An emotionally charged play celebrating the extraordinary life of Black Victorian circus performer/impresario: Pablo Fanque – the boss!

His life spans from rags to riches; born in a workhouse, sold as a circus apprentice, he became an extraordinary equestrian. Uniquely, his horses ‘danced’ to the music.

He toured Yorkshire and Lancashire. Pablo was gifted a horse from Queen Victoria’s stables but experienced trauma and tragedy; his circus destroyed by a cyclone, his wife killed by a circus building collapsing on her in Leeds. Both are buried in Woodhouse.

He was later immortalised in the Beatles, Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite.

Presented in our gorgeous hand-painted circus ring, it’s a dynamic, accessible, interactive performance integrating verbatim material, new writing, dance and trapeze to banging 90’s tunes!
