Music For the Sun King
The splendour of Versailles during the reign of Louise XIV is brought vividly to life by Leeds Baroque Choir and Orchestra in in this programme of sacred and secular music by the three most prominent court composers, Jean- Baptiste Lully, Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Michel-Richard De Lalande.
The main works are Lully’s miniature pastoral opera ‘La grotte de Versailles’ and Charpentier’s great setting of the ‘De Profundis’, written for the funeral of Louis XIV’s queen in 1683
