The CBSO at Cardiff St David’s Hall

2nd May 2024

From the CBSO’s new Music Director comes a vibrant cosmopolitan programme beginning with Gershwin’s An American in Paris, whose heady love affair with the city mixes bluesy melodies with tooting taxi horns. There’s an American in Cardiff, too, as Jeremy Denk performs GRAMMY-nominated Anna Clyne’s ATLAS. Inspired by artist Gerhard Richter it’s a fine example of her richly textured yet immediately accessible music. Ravel’s delicate vision of a dead princess’ world offers a touching interlude before the bolder gestures of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Usually it’s heard in Ravel’s famous orchestration, but here it’s the father of the Proms, Sir Henry Wood, who colours the imagined gallery’s portraits and scenes with vivid tones.
