SAA – uk presents: Maya: Birth of a Superhero
Presented in partnership with South Asian Arts – uk, this immersive performance combines storytelling, visuals and music to challenge long – held taboos surrounding menstruation.
Set in contemporary London, the narrative follows an ordinary teenager named Maya, whose experience with her first period becomes a source of personal empowerment and resilience as she navigates the silence and stigma often found within families and communities. The project’s name is derived from the Sanskrit word for magic and illusion.
Created and directed by Poulomi Basu in collaboration with CJ Clarke, the work features photography and creative direction by Bishi and Fiona Garden. The performance uses arresting visuals and a layered sonic landscape to explore themes of transformation, body identity and personal strength, reframing a private rite of passage on an expansive scale.
