Banco de Gaia (live)
Toby Marks has been recording and performing as Banco de Gaia for over thirty years, establishing himself as a central figure in British electronic and ambient music. Emerging in 1989 during the initial wave of acid and ambient house, the project has evolved into a sophisticated blend of global instrumentation and electronic production.
Marks’ early work remains a significant part of the electronic music canon. His 1994 debut studio album, Maya, was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, while the 1995 follow-up, Last Train to Lhasa, reached the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart. These records, along with tracks such as Heliopolis, helped establish a blueprint for global electronica by integrating field recordings and international samples with club-focused production.
For this performance at the Howard Assembly Room, the music draws on a broad palette of influences ranging from the atmospheric textures of Pink Floyd to elements of reggae, jazz, and progressive rock. His output incorporates rock, worldbeat, and jazz, creating a sound that moves between driving rhythms and ambient, evolving electronic landscapes. Marks continues to release new material through his Disco Gecko Recordings label, including the 2024 studio album Trauma and the Rewritten Histories retrospective series.
