Space Afrika: Opera Omnia (PG TBC)
This unique event celebrates the release of their new album Quiet Storm, on DAIS Records. The Q&A portion of the event will be hosted by NTS resident and polytype records founder, edv3ctor.
Opera Omnia, directed by Valentin Noujaïm, was shot on 35mm and 16mm film using surveillance cameras. It unfurls a dreamlike atmosphere carried by the haunting melodies and evocative soundscapes of the Space Afrika duo. Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, the film follows the night journey of two young black boys through the abandoned industrial spaces of Manchester, taking forgotten souls back to life. The deserted places are haunted by an opera singer (Axelle Fanyo), who lends a ghostly, lyrical presence to this melancholy universe.
Lulled by their voices reciting verses from Dante’s Inferno, the film explores industrial landscapes imbued with the memories of vanished workers, often replaced in cities obsessed with transformation and the erasure of the past. As they wander through Manchester’s urban labyrinth, the two protagonists’ encounters and experiences reveal an inner quest for their identity and place in the world.
Combining live performance, video and sound installation, this immersive audiovisual experience transports viewers into the heart of a sonic and visual odyssey.
Space Afrika will be in conversation with edv3ctor about the immersive film, and the making of their new album, Quiet Storm, out September 25th on Dais Records.
