Leeds 400 Concert with West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra

26th April 2026

In this special concert, the West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra will be playing music marking 400 years of the city of Leeds being granted its royal charter.

We’ll be blowing the dust off some of the music that was played a century ago at the 300th anniversary concert, coupled with pieces by composers who’ve worked in or been connected with the city in more recent years.

Expect to hear the overture to ‘The Golden Wedding’ specially written by Frank Kitson and Arthur Grimshaw for the 300th anniversary concert, ‘The Highland Express’ by Dr Philip Wilby, music from Cinema Paradiso arranged by Angela Morley, and much more besides.

So do come and join us for a very special birthday celebration; if you’re minded to, you might wish to dress as a meadow fairy or Scottish train driver!

As the music percolates around the museum galleries, take a moment to wonder at the generations of Leodensians who have contributed to the rich and varied musical life of our city.
