Afrikan Market Leeds
The Afrikan Market Leeds is a vibrant, community-led cultural market delivered by Unity Does MAATer CIC in Chapeltown, Leeds, the cultural heart and starting point of the world-famous Leeds West Indian Carnival.
Established in November 2021, the market runs six times a year (March, April, June, July, November and December) and has become a trusted platform celebrating African and Caribbean heritage through culture, creativity and enterprise.
The market embodies Unity Does MAATer CIC’s vision of “Restoring the Village”, rooted in the African principle that communities share responsibility for uplifting both younger and elder generations.
It provides:
* A safe and inclusive cultural space
* A platform for Black-owned businesses
* Intergenerational connection
* Creative expression and heritage preservation
* Local economic empowerment
What Happens at the Market?
Afrikan Market Leeds is more than a trading event, it is a living cultural experience. Visitors can enjoy:
* African and Caribbean food
* Independent traders selling fashion, beauty products, art and handmade goods
It blends commerce, culture, education and wellbeing in one accessible community space.
Community & Economic Impact
Since 2021, the market has:
* Supported emerging and established Black-owned micro-businesses
* Increased footfall in Chapeltown
* Strengthened cultural identity and pride
Role in Leeds’ Cultural Landscape
Located in Chapeltown, historically significant in Black British cultural history, the Afrikan Market contributes to:
