Join the annual Leeds Independent DIY film festival Scalarama this chosen community hosted film screening to families, educators and mentors are invited to reminisce and watch an award winning film drama focused on the childhood resilience and adversity of 11 year old Akeelah Anderson as she enters a national Spelling Bee (spelling competition) for the first time. Participate in a pre show included within the ticket price a participatory workshop (4pm til 5.45pm) film screening to take place promptly at 6pm and end at approx 8pm. No late arrivals so please organise early arrangements, it’s important not to disturb the audience members.
All ticket holders encouraged to attend the pre show interactive and engaging workshop & refreshments and more to be announced…
Pay it forward price : If you can afford to Pay a cost of a ticket forward or pay additional towards running costs for the independent film event within a community venue (It’s appreciated) – supporting the festival 2026.
The minimum price covers the cost of a child/youth/student ticket or any with proof (DWP UC or Income Support welfare benefit, No Recourse to Public Funds/Leeds Card Extra, Pension Credit or (Flex) Foster Discount Card for foster parents & Blue light (NHS) – proof will need to brought on the day alongside your ticket booking & will be requested to be viewed prior to the start of the show.
It’s a PG certificate film therefore (babes in arms under 2s) will be at no fee (fee waiver)
All under 18s are advised to be at the guidance of a parent/carer or legal guardian (no responsibility for unsupervised under 18s during the screening.
It’s a family event and all tickets cover the cost of a light complimentary cultural snack in keeping with the film & heritage
