Exploring Ceramics
Join artist Niamh Phillips for a relaxed, hands-on pottery course at Northlight Arts Centre, exploring the fundamentals of working with clay in a supportive and welcoming environment.
This four-week course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those looking to build confidence and develop their skills. You’ll be guided through core hand-building techniques, learning how to shape, form and refine clay into functional or sculptural pieces. There’s plenty of room to experiment, follow your own ideas and work at your own pace.
Working with clay is a deeply tactile process. It asks you to slow down, focus, and engage with the material in a direct, physical way. Many people find it both grounding and absorbing — a chance to step away from screens and daily noise, and spend time making something real with your hands.
Niamh brings a thoughtful, intuitive approach to ceramics, supporting each participant individually while encouraging exploration and curiosity. Whether you arrive with a clear idea or no experience at all, you’ll be supported to create work that feels personal and satisfying.
All sessions take place at Northlight Art Centre — a calm, light-filled environment that’s become known for its friendly atmosphere and high-quality creative teaching. Groups are kept at a manageable size to ensure everyone receives guidance where needed.
By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a strong foundation in hand-building techniques and created a number of your own ceramic pieces to take away.
What to expect:
• Step-by-step guidance from a practising artist
• A relaxed, non-judgemental environment
• Time to experiment and develop your own ideas
• Small group setting with individual support
Who it’s for:
• Complete beginners
• Those returning to ceramics after time away
• Anyone looking for a slower, hands-on creative experience
Whether you’re trying something new or reconnecting with making, this course offers a space to focus, create and enjoy the process.
