From Italy to Yorkshire: stories of migration and belonging in Leeds and West Yorkshire, by Professor Chiara La Sala

17th November 2026

Migration, identity, belonging: these are some of the biggest questions of our time. But what can the Italian experience in West Yorkshire teach us about them? In this session, Professor La Sala examines the history and contemporary realities of Italian migration to Leeds and the wider region, drawing on personal testimonies, community histories, and new research. Discover the stories behind one of Yorkshire’s lesser-known diasporas and explore how migration shapes both newcomers and the places they call home.

Talk delivered by Professor Chiara La Sala from the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds.

This is a Leeds City of Languages Festival event.
