Royal Armouries Lecture: Survival Strategies when confronting a Mongol invasion

During the early thirteenth century, the Mongol Empire conquered the greater part of the Asian continent, subjugating tens of different civilizations and communities. Thousands died in the fighting – many more were displaced – but some survived.

Focusing on the Mongol invasions into the Middle East, Dr Morton will explore how some territories managed to the resist the Mongols, while others found ways either to survive or even to thrive under Mongol rule. Asking the question, is the breakdown of social order and the norms of everyday life a thing of the past, or does it hold lessons for the future?
