Tour of Beyond the Visual with Lucia Beijlsmit and Aaron McPeake
Join artists Lucia Beijlsmit and Aaron McPeake for a tour of the Beyond the Visual exhibition at Henry Moore Institute.
Lucia Beijlsmit was born in Amsterdam and raised in Holland. She lives in Spain where she formed her identity as a sculptor and stone carver. Beijlsmit enjoys experimenting with straight lines and curves, equilibrium, openings and cavities. Her work emphasises asymmetry and the contrast between colours and surface before and after carving and polishing. Beijlsmit has four of her ‘window’ works in the exhibition, three in marble and one in sandstone, which introduce a new dimension when touched by visitors’ hands.
Aaron McPeake is a sculptor and filmmaker with sound at the centre of his practice. He is registered blind, and his sculptural works are designed to be physically interacted with, creating multisensory engagements. He has exhibited widely internationally and completed many public sculpture commissions. He teaches at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, and is co-investigator on the AHRC-funded project Beyond the Visual: Blindness and expanded sculpture and co-curator of the exhibition. McPeake has two works in Beyond the Visual – Rings 2025 and Icelandic Landscapes 2007-24, made from bell bronze and designed to be interacted with through touch, they can be rung to create sounds as well as smelled, engaging many senses to experience.
