Duo Dorado
Glories of the German Baroque
Hazel Brooks (violin) David Pollock (harpsichord)
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) – Cantabile, ma un poco adagio, BWV 1019a
Johann Christoph Pez (1664-1716) – Sonata in G minor, B-LVu P206/59 (30)
Johann Schop (c. 1590-1667) – Untitled fantasia in D minor, from ‘t Uitnemend Kabinet, vol. 2
Johann Sebastian Bach – Sonata in G major, BWV 1019, Allegro, largo, allegro, adagio, allegro
Duo Dorado performs an attractive programme of music from seventeenth and eighteenth-century Germany. This showcases three master composers, Johann Schop, Johann Christoph Pez and Johann Sebastian Bach, from the early, middle and late Baroque periods respectively. The great J. S. Bach needs little introduction. The other two composers, less familiar today, were highly respected in their own time and deserve to be better known. All three composers were influenced by the Italian style of writing for violin. Pez studied with Corelli in Italy, Bach copied and arranged works by Vivaldi, and Schop was influenced by the early Italian school. Their works are powerful, striking and beautiful, full of sumptuous melodies, rich harmonies and tantalising counterpoint. Lively spoken introductions put the music in context. Hazel and David are prize-winning early music specialists, who have been praised for their dynamic performances.
