Manchester Collective: Patterns in Repeat

26th June 2026

Manchester Collective return to the Howard Assembly Room with Patterns in Repeat – a programme that explores rhythm as an embodied, grounding experience. This performance brings together the work of three significant figures in contemporary experimental music, each of whom approaches composition as a physical and vocal extension of the human body.

The set includes a rare instrumental piece, Backlight, by the visionary Meredith Monk. Best known for her vocal acrobatics and influence on artists such as Björk, Monk’s work often transcends traditional classical boundaries to incorporate elements of theatre and movement.

The Collective also perform a brand-new work for mixed ensemble by Cassie Kinoshi. A leading figure in London’s jazz scene and a prolific composer for the stage, Kinoshi’s practice is rooted in improvisation and Black culture. This new commission, supported by the Manchester Collective Commissioning Club, reflects her vibrant, multi-disciplinary approach to sound.

Completing the programme is Cassandra Miller’s Perfect Offering. Written during a period of illness, the piece takes meditative singing as a starting point to explore the passage of time and the internal sensations of the body.

Please note that while the ensemble performs her work, Cassie Kinoshi will not be appearing live.
