Temple Newsam
Take a trip to Temple Newsam, a country estate in the heart of Leeds. With a variety of attractions to keep the whole family entertained, the estate comprises of a Tudor Jacobean mansion house, working rare breed farm, indoor adventure play facility as well as rolling parkland.
The best way to explore the estate is on foot, taking in the stunning sights of the 1500 acres of Capability Brown landscaped gardens, woodland and park areas. Hit the nature trails, perfect for walking, cycling and horse riding. During the summertime take a picnic by the lakeside gardens or have some family fun in the outdoor adventure playground.
Why not discover more about the history of Temple Newsam in the grand and glorious surroundings of Temple Newsam House? Famous as the birthplace of Lord Darnley, the notorious husband of Mary Queen of Scots, it’s been described as one of the best heritage properties in Britain. It is also home to one of the most important collections of decorative arts including an extensive silverware collection.
Over at Home Farm, visitors can get up close to their favourite farmyard friends in the historic cobbled streets. The farm is one of the largest working rare breed facilities in Europe with outbuildings dating back to the 17th century. Find out what life was like working on the estate and keep an eye out for family friendly events during the school holidays.
Explore our new indoor adventure play facility, perfect for families looking for fun whatever the weather. Set within the beautifully restored 100-year-old cow byre, the Play Barn offers two play zones, one for toddlers and one for children up to 12 years old, inspired by the animals and countryside of Temple Newsam. There’s a family friendly café serving drinks and light bites, ideal for a break while the kids play, and a gift shop featuring farm-themed toys and books.
In the courtyard, our Tea Room serves breakfast, lunch, light bites and indulgent sweet treats for all ages. The menu changes with the seasons and offers plenty of choice for both adults and children. You’ll find ample seating indoors and in the courtyard. Dogs are welcome too; we even have a dedicated dog room beside the café (subject to availability). Mrs Pawson’s Shop is stocked to the brim with a tempting selection of locally sourced treats, including speciality teas, biscuits, beer and delicious Yorkshire ice cream.
Temple Newsam has a little bit of something for every age and interest. Check out the Temple Newsam website for further information and details of their upcoming programme including special events and exhibitions.
