Dave Bainbridge and Sally Minnear – in concert

12th July 2024

DAVE BAINBRIDGE is co-founder of Iona the renowned and celebrated folk/rock/ambient band and also the keyboard/guitarist in Lifesigns and The Strawbs.

The concert will feature emotive guitar, solo bouzouki, piano and keyboard improvisations, traditional jigs, reels and airs with some great songs from Dave Bainbridge’s band Iona and his solo albums.

SALLY MINNEAR has been the vocalist on Bainbridge’s songs since the duo formed in 2015. Previously Sally was the lead vocalist in the touring production of Michael Flatley’s hugely successful dance spectacular ‘Lord of the Dance’. Sally is the daughter of multi-instrumentalist Kerry Minnear of the vastly respected and influential ’70’s progressive band Gentle Giant.

Dave and Sally first toured together as a duo in July 2015 where one of their gigs was at Chapel A House Concerts in Leeds. Such were the incredibly positive reactions to the tour that they have continued work together whenever their busy schedules allow, bringing their magic to audiences far and wide. Their first release together ‘Live in the Studio’ DVD 2018, has received amazing reviews and audience reactions.

Dave Bainbridge studied at the Leeds College of Music, gaining several performance awards (including BBC Radio 2 Best Jazz Soloist Award). Since then his musical career has involved composing, recording, performing, producing, arranging and teaching.

When living in Leeds, Dave went on to play guitar in jazz fusion band ‘Sound Effect’, which featured on keys Paul Birchall (currently keyboard player with Heather Small’s, Combination Head). In 1982 Dave simultaneously joined jazz fusion pioneer Gary Boyle’s band as well the soul band ‘Snake Davis and the Alligator Shoes’ playing keys in both bands. Davis went on to play the famous saxophone solos on top hit songs by Lisa Stansfield, M-People and Take That.

With the Norman Beaker band, Bainbridge backed many visiting UK, US and European blues artists, both ‘live’ and on recordings for the ‘Paul Jones Blues Show’ on BBC Radio 2, including Jack Bruce, Paul Jones, Pete Brown and Ted Hawkins.

Dave has also played keyboards with blues legend Buddie Guy and in 1990 was one of the nominees in the category of ‘Instrumentalist of the Year’ in the British Blues Connections awards.

Whilst still at college in Leeds Bainbridge struck up a working partnership with singer/songwriter Adrian Snell that spanned the next 8 years from 1982 to 1990 meeting Joanne Hogg and David Fitzgerald. Iona was a progressive Celtic rock band, formed in the late 80’s with multi-instrumentalists Dave Bainbridge and David Fitzgerald and on lead vocalist Joanne Hogg. Troy Donockley joined later, playing the uilleann pipes, low whistles, and other instruments.

Bainbridge has also worked with many other artists including: Gloria Gaynor, Paul Jones, Phil Keaggy, Michael Ball, Soulful Terrain, and Moya Brennan (Clannad) and Robert Fripp. Dave’s music has been heard on numerous TV programmes and he has written the soundtracks for numerous short film.

Sally Minnear is not just the vocalist for the evening but comes also gifted with the vocal loops, acoustic guitar, drums, percussion, tin whistle and violin. Sally has been steeped in music throughout her life, with her brother and sister also being successful musicians. Sally had a minor hit with the song “For You” aged just 18, before forming the acoustic duo ‘Creatures of Habit’ as a vehicle for her own songs. After completing a music degree, during which time she played fiddle and sang in a popular traditional Irish band, Sally secured the featured vocalist role in Michael Flatley’s hugely successful dance spectacular ‘Lord of the Dance’. Sally toured with the production for several years, before leaving to start a family.
