Give Us A Look
There are lots of workshops out there around ‘How to write for your creative practice’ or ‘How to write your artist statement’ but building the language and having response to your own practice comes with the privilege of being able to have people to talk to. If you, like me, have family and friends who are not particularly creative, hearing ‘it’s nice’ does not always help us find the words for our own practice. Having space to talk about your own art, and other art really helps you develop a sense of what it is you are doing, why you’re doing and how others respond (the audience).
So, bring your finished/unfinished art, your ideas or dead-end and take part in a show and tell with other creatives! As part of ‘Give us a Look’ we are breaking down into small groups of artists and giving you and others a chance to explore the words that help you understand your art.
This will also be a pilot to see if this is something, like our research suggests, people really need and want and how we could look at making a longer term and sustainable event.
About the Project
‘Let Us See You’ will be an 12 month project of curatorial artist support and development, and exhibition opportunities for Leeds based artists culminating in a series of exhibitions across the city at key partner venues. We want to open up the process of curation and selection for an art show by investing in artists from the very beginning of the process and offering support right through to the end; kicking off by hosting a series of accessible surgeries that demystify the application and selection process, that focus on what the artists’ needs are rather than a predetermined curatorial focus. ‘Let Us See You’ builds on the inclusive work of Aire Place Studios and continues to support the work of communities that experience barriers to participation.
Supported with funding from Leeds Inspired, part of Leeds City Council.
