The Last Guest of the Holloway Motel (18 TBC)
More than 40 years after Tony Powell’s time as a star footballer at Norwich City FC, he is the ageing manager of the dilapidated Holloway Motel in West Hollywood, Los Angeles. Tony moved to the U.S. in 1981 to continue his career in the North American Soccer League (NASL), but then disappeared, abandoning his wife and family for a new life in gay-friendly L.A., rather than face the repercussions of coming out at the height of his career. This film tells his important and moving story.
The film premiered at Tribeca in 2025, and had its first screening outside the U.S. at BFI Flare in London in March. Co-directed by Ramiel Petros and Nicholas Freeman, it is co-produced by former Leeds United player Robbie Rogers, who along with Tony Powell, is one of very few footballers to have played in the professional men’s game in the U.K. and come out publicly as gay or bi.
This screening will start at the advertised start time, so please arrive early.
Supported by Leeds Queer Film Festival, and Football v Homophobia, an international initiative that exists to challenge discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression at all levels of football.
This special screening on Leeds Pride weekend is part of FvH’s Football Pride series, and is sponsored by the Premier League. The screening will be followed by a Q&A.
