Piety and Profit: Contrasting Careers in Stained Glass
Victorian Leeds was home to a flourishing stained-glass industry, yet the men behind it were remarkably different. This talk by Samantha Yates explores the lives and careers of William Pape and John James Kayll, two figures who helped shape Leeds’ stained-glass trade in the late nineteenth century. Drawing on original research, it examines the contrast between Pape’s religious background and Kayll’s business-minded approach, revealing how faith, ambition, and enterprise influenced the production of stained glass in the city. Through their stories, the talk offers a fascinating glimpse into an often-overlooked aspect of Leeds’ artistic and industrial heritage.
