Gathered Colour: Natural Dyeing & Screen Printing onto Textiles
Gathered Colour is a community focused creative project bringing together participants from across Leeds to explore natural dyeing, plant-based printmaking, and textile techniques.
Textile Artist and Printmaker Kirstie Williams is working in partnership with local organisations including Leeds Print Workshop, Pyramid of Arts, Stitch-Up CIC and MAFWA Theatre, the project offers a series of workshops for their communities where participants create textile pieces exploring their shared experiences. This will be combined into collaborative artworks celebrating the diversity of Leeds as part of Leeds 400 celebrations.
Rooted in sustainability and wellbeing, the project encourages environmentally conscious creative practice while fostering community connection and a sense of belonging through making. On this one day workshop, participants will explore natural colour for dyeing, such as using onion skins, turmeric and madder, and also gain insight into plant-based inks for screen printing. Participants will create a number of colour swatches and test pieces to take home, and contribute to a larger collaborative screen printed artwork.
This Gathered Colour workshop has been subsidised by funding from Leeds City Council’s Cultural Development Programme.
Do I need to bring anything?
Basic materials such as small fabric samples and natural dyes will be provided on the day. Bring a notebook and pen with you.
You may wish to bring along some more natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen or wool along to try. If you have any natural dyes you wish to try please feel free to bring them along too.
Accessibility Info
Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
