Night of the Demon (PG)
American psychologist Dr. John Holden arrives in England to debunk a satanic cult led by the suave yet malevolent Dr. Julian Karswell. When Karswell slips Holden a runic parchment, undefinable supernatural forces begin to collect around him. Holden, a rational sceptic, dismisses this as nonsense. But the curse, it turns out, has a deadline to fulfil.
Based on the short story Casting the Runes by MR James, Jacques Tourneur’s film is a lesson in understatement, the approaching horror largely off in the shifting shadows, but imbuing Night of the Demon (A.K.A. Curse of the Demon) with a creeping, encroaching dread, leading to a final unavoidable fate…
BOOK SIGNING & PODCAST PANEL DISCUSSION
For this screening we will be joined by the wonderful Evolution of Horror podcast who will be selling and signing copies of their brand new book The Evolution of Horror: A Terrifying Guide to Horror Movie History.
Adapted from the acclaimed podcast and with a foreword by Reece Shearsmith, the book takes a deep dive into the history of cinema’s darkest genre. Covering everything from silent films to modern masterpieces, author Mike Muncer breaks down eight key horror subgenres – including vampires, slashers, zombies and ghost stories – to explore the tropes, motifs, historical context and psychology behind why certain stories scare us so much.
Stylishly illustrated throughout with stills, posters and stunning artworks by artist Mike Lee-Graham, this is a must-read guide to the eclectic, enthralling and deliciously macabre world of horror.
The Evolution of Horror book is £25, which you can pre-order when you buy your ticket (just follow the instructions in the basket), or you can pick one up when you arrive.
The Evolution of Horror will also be hosting a live podcast panel discussion after the screening!
